Poor Sleep Could Lead to Pain Problems

A 9 to 5 work schedule can leave us feeling exhausted, but waking up tired is not normal. Sleep quality directly impacts work quality and long-term health, including the health and function of the spine. As a third of our life is spent in slumber, we should certainly get a good night's sleep.

A healthy spine should be straight when viewed from the front and have natural curves at the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar positions when viewed from the side, providing pressure relief, shock absorption and movement. Sleeping on your back is the most relaxing position for the body, but it's okay to switch positions as long as your spine remains straight. However, it is difficult for everyone to sleep in the same position throughout the night. Maintain your spine straight when sleeping on your side or the natural curvature of the cervical and lumbar spine for a healthy sleep no matter the position.

Some incorrect sleeping positions (e.g. sleeping on your back) put extra pressure on the neck and can easily lead to cervical misalignment. Sleeping with your hand on your forehead or head, or often with your partner's arm pressed against you, napping on the sofa, or dozing off on transport. Both can easily strain the shoulder and neck muscles and cause inflammation, resulting in problems with the cervical spine and shoulder joints. In severe cases, it can lead to misalignment of the cervical spine, causing pressure on the nerves, shoulder and arm muscle pain, numbness in the fingers, especially the tail finger, and limited range of motion.

Many people are suffering from neck pain and poor sleep quality, despite trying multiple pillows, it may be a sign of cervical spine misalignment. But when you cannot get a good night's sleep after trying several pillows, you may have a problem with your cervical spine. The natural physiological curvature of the cervical spine is altered due to misalignment and the pillow does not support the curve of the neck to support it, preventing the muscles from fully relaxing. Therefore, even if you replace the pillow with a more supportive pillow, it is still in vain. It is advisable to seek professional advice for a detailed examination and a good night’s sleep!
