  • Q:Why should I see a chiropractor?

Are you suffering from lower back pain? Or, do your headaches never seem to go away? Have you been injured at work or in a car accident and are having trouble dealing with the pain? Are you active in sports, but after the game have stiff joints and shooting pains?

Are you pregnant with an aching back? Are you in your Golden years and having trouble enjoying retirement because those aches and pains are getting in the way? Are you concerned with the health of your whole body, and are looking for a different approach to health care? Are you concerned with your newborn's or child's long term well being and growth?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you should visit your local chiropractor. Every day in Canada, over 120,000 people receive treatment from Doctors of Chiropractic. Your chiropractor is a doctor with over 7 years of university education in the art of hands-on healing.

Chiropractors use a combination of treatments for your condition. They are specialists in using exact, gentle manipulations of your spine to make you feel great. Chiropractic treatment also includes diet and exercise programs to get you back into tip-top shape.

  • Q:Are chiropractic treatments safe and do they hurt?

Chiropractic treatments are extremely safe for individuals of all ages - from infants to 100 year olds. Our treatments are safe because we only use natural and noninvasive methods of care. Research consistently shows that care from chiropractors is among the safest care available and is literally light years ahead of traditional medical care in terms of "safeness".

The treatments themselves are generally not painful. In fact, most patients look forward to their treatments as many experience instantaneous relief immediately afterwards. Few patients may experience some side effects such as feeling more uncomfortable, stiff or tired for a day or so - these effects are normally minor and do not last for very long. It is important that you talk to your chiropractor if you have any questions during any part of your care.

  • Q:Do chiropractors prescribe drugs or surgical procedures?
A:Chiropractors don't prescribe drugs, and do not perform surgeries. The doctor focus on drug-free, non-invasive procedures for restoring proper function as a way of pain relief and bring optimal health.
  • Q:What will a chiropractor do at my first visit?

On your first visit to the doctor's office, your Chiropractor will:

    Review your health history.

Learn important information about any surgeries, major illnesses or events in your past that could contribute to your current health problem.

Conduct a thorough neurological, orthopaedic, and chiropractic examination.

Perform essential diagnostic physical tests, such as reflexes and muscle strength.

If necessary, take an appropriate x-ray.

  • Q:Do I need to have x-rays before treatment?

It varies from one case to another. Your chiropractor will decide whether you need x-rays taken of your spine for diagnosis before giving you treatment.

  • Q:Can a chiropractor really get rid of my headaches?

It will help to understand what causes most headaches. Your spine protects your nervous system which starts with the brain and becomes the spinal cord. When the vertebrae in your neck are unable to move properly, it irritates or puts pressure on the nerves in that area.

That can cause headaches. To correct this problem (called a subluxation) a chiropractor gently adjusts the vertebrae. Since most headaches are caused by subluxations, they will soon disappear.

  • Q:What is subluxation and can it do me harm?

A subluxation complex or 'subluxation' is the term used by chiropractors to describe a loss of function in the spine and nervous system due to a reduction in its normal motion or alignment and this can affect the quality of your life.

  • Q:What is an adjustment?

An adjustment is a gentle, specific movement of part of your body, the purpose of which is the correction of your spinal subluxation(s), which in turn will alleviate the impairment of nerve function in your body. It is not only painless, but often is pleasurable. After your vertebrae are back in their proper position, you will feel much less stress and tension.

  • Q:What causes the "cracking" or "popping" sound made during a chiropractic adjustment?

It's not your spine making that noise. It's just like the sound made when you "crack" your knuckles. The sound is caused by nitrogen gas rushing in between joints in your spine when they are partially separated during adjustment.

  • Q:How long will it take?

While treatment lengths vary somewhat from person to person and from condition to condition, there are a few rules of thumb you can follow.

First, newer injuries, if treated appropriately and immediately, tend to respond to fewer visits assuming that major tissue injury has not occurred. Many of these first time injuries can be effectively managed in as little as 3 to 4 visits. Conditions that have been present for greater than 3 months and recurring conditions are generally more stubborn and difficult to manage. Resolution may require 20 visits or more.

The only sure way to determine how long your treatment will take is to schedule a consultation and/or examination.

For those of you who believe in just waiting for the problem to "go away" on it's own - understand that the longer your condition has been around, the more treatments it will eventually require to resolve.

  • Q:Do I have to keep coming back for treatments?

You may have heard the notion that once you go to a chiropractor you have to keep going back. Before we answer that question, ask yourself how many times you have visited a dentist? Like most people, you've probably gone dozens of times. Why? Quite simply, to prevent your teeth from literally rotting out of your head.

Once we have eliminated your pain and rehabilitated the injured tissues we do recommend that you maintain a schedule of periodic spinal checkups. Like your dentist and like many of the medical experts are now recognizing, prevention is the key to reducing recurrences of existing health conditions and minimizing new injuries in the future.

So the answer is yes, we want you to keep coming back, but just periodically. Periodic chiropractic care minimizes spinal and nerve stresses, reduces recurrences of old injuries, prevents new injuries from developing, minimizes degenerative processes, which enhances overall health and wellness.
